VI. Findings

Based on my data collected from digital autoethnographic recordings, I suggest that “people” exert six major types of influences on webtext invention: Motivate, Halt, Give, Inform, Suggest, and Re-Envision. Additionally, they exert these influences on webtext design in five main capacities: as editors, collaborators, consultants, colleagues, and students, with differing degrees of impact on the invention process based on the differing nuances of their roles.

Figures 15-16 identify the icon-codes, and Tables 10-11 define these codes. Figures 17, 19, and 21 display the triads in table form to compare patterns in relationship across people, pieces, and influences across autoethnographic, published, and interview narratives. Figures 18, 20, and 22 count the number of influences appearing in each narrative set.

Table 10: Definitions of People-Based Influences

People-Based Influence Definition
Motivate providing motivation to bring the pieces together
Halt halting the arrangement of pieces in favor of another course of action
Give providing new pieces to bring into the invention process
Inform bringing new knowledge to bear on the project’s current pieces
Suggest suggesting new relationships among pieces already present within the design
Re-Envision calling for a new configuration of pieces

Table 11: Definitions of People

People Definition
Editor anyone serving in an official capacity as a member of a professionally recognized disciplinary publication venue, such as a journal or a press
Collaborator demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the project’s development, a deliberate material contribution to some aspect of the project’s total components, and a mutual sense of reciprocity with the other collaborators
Consultant individuals whose help is sought out to solve a specific problem in the composing and design process based on their particular technical skills or expertise
Colleague individuals from the professional/disciplinary community who offer insight or feedback briefly on the project’s intellectual scope
Student individual under the composer's instruction in an official capacity
